Graham Noble Norwell was born in Edinburgh, Scotland in 1901. Norwell came to Kingston, Ontario in 1914 and studied art under well-known Canadian artists including Group of Seven member Arthur Lismer. He then studied in London; and with Augustus John in Paris. Working in both oil and watercolor, he is best known for his Quebec, and specifically Laurentian, landscapes with particular emphasis on winter scenes. His work is in the prestigious collections of the Art Gallery of Ontario, and the National Gallery of Canada.
