Collection: Henri Leopold Masson
Masson was born in Belgium in 1907 and moved to Ottawa, Canada with his family in 1921. Inspired by the Group of Seven artists, Masson employed a fluid and broad brush style in painting figures as well as landscapes. He was self-taught and painted many of his landscape scenes in the Hull and Gatineau Valley areas of Quebec. He exhibited at Ottawa's Wallack Galleries in the 1960s and 70s and a significant collection of his work remains in the National Gallery of Canada today. Masson was recognized as a member of the Canadian Group of Painters, Canadian Society of Painters in Water Colours, Canadian Society of Graphic Arts and the Ontario Society of Artists.
